About
Our family first started selling cider in 1805 at Crabbs Park Farm, Paignton, were farming in Paignton before then, and in all likelihood were making cider as well.
Nicholas Prout Hunt was a prominent farmer in the Paignton area in the 1800's and a director of the Paignton Harbour Company which was instrumental in getting Paignton Harbour built in the 1830's. It was estimated that the harbour could be used for the export of up to 40,000 hogsheads (or approx 2.2 million gallons) of cider per annum, as well as importing coal.
The cider industry petered out in Paignton during the agricultural depression of the 1930's. This was exacerbated by the urban growth of Paignton as it became a popular seaside resort.
In the 1950's William Hunt started to make cider again at Yalberton from apples that had previously been sold to Whiteways, the makers of cydrax. We can still be found at Yalberton today, and still use the orchards that have nestled in this quiet valley on the very edge of Paignton for more than two centuries.
